Falling into October with K-2

Hello K-2 families and guardians!

It's been almost a month since the last blog post. We have been incredibly busy in the art room doing a lot of exploring and learning.

We now have three center choices open that include drawing with colored pencils, markers, and crayons, building with foam blocks, wooden blocks, and Legos, and collage, or cutting and tearing paper then gluing it down.

Students come into the art room and have their choice among the three centers. Students in first and second grade can change stations whenever they would like, but they must clean up their area first before moving. Our kinders are able to also switch when they would like, but they must clean up their centers first and then ask Ms. Mesenbring so she can check to be sure things are cleaned up. We are loving the autonomy and having responsibility in the art room!

Now that we have a good system down of what students expect when they get into the art room, we are going to begin our year long learning process. We will be learning about the Elements of Art including line, shape, color, space, and texture. We will also learn about an artist each month and look at the artworks they create. We will learn some language we can use to talk about art.

Our first element we will be discussing is Line with the artist Bruce Pollock. We have watched a Youtube video of a song about art and will watch this video for the remainder of the month every time they have art.

Finally, students are beginning to learn about the critiquing process. We had a sharing day where students shared one sentence about their artwork, finished or not, and then got to choose one student in the class to give a compliment about their artwork. We talked about how to be more specific with our compliments using the form of:

"I like your artwork because...."

Students have enjoyed sharing their artworks with one another and getting compliments. Eventually this will morph into asking questions about artwork and giving one another suggestions.

Lots of learning is happening in our art room. Everything from how to be a good citizen in the art room, to how to talk about our artwork, give compliments, and how to better our artwork through using Line.

Thanks for taking the time to read this blog post!
